Deity Inspiration - Surya

In Sanskrit, Surya means Sun, and the Sun is recognized as a deity associated with light, energy, and life. In numerous cultures ranging from Ancient Greece (Helios) and Rome (Sol Invictus) to Egypt (Ra) and the Incan Empire (Inti), the sun has been worshiped for its life-giving and life-sustaining powers. Across cultures, sun symbolizes vitality, extroversion, masculinity, health, beneficence, prosperity, and maintaining the cosmic order. The sun is absolutely essential for our human existence because without it our planet would freeze and life would cease.

Hindu mythology depicts Surya as riding a chariot drawn by seven horses, representing the seven days of the week and the seven colors of the chakra. As in the above image, he can also hold lotuses symbolizing the abundance and sustenance that the sun provides, but more importantly as symbolic Sahasrara, a connection with the Supreme. And, he also can be seen in colorful images with a radiant a golden hue, adorned with golden jewelry and a crown, emphasizing his royal and divine status.

This month, notice the themes and signs of Surya in your life— vitality, health, prosperity, and abundance. As you notice synchronicity in your own life and connection to the sun, see if you can connect to how these qualities also effect other Beings in our collective existence, guiding you toward understanding and compassion for the cycles and bounty of being a part of nature.
